the hybrid

as part of a sculpting class during my very first year in the department of ceramics and glass design in the Bezalel academy of Art and design, we were assigned to create a hybrid - choosing any two things or ideas we wanted and creating a hybrid of the two.
this project was the beginning of my fascination with the form of beetles.
prior to my studies in the ceramics department i was actually majoring in graphic design in the visual communication department- and so the two dimensional aspect of art was more familiar to me.
i've grown accustom to navigating the lines and shapes of objects and ideas rather than their form.
the two things i have decided to merge were beetles and flowers.
i have dissected and simplified the form of both to create a modular piece in which the two dimensional tiles created a three dimensional flower.
the middle shafts were stackable and had slits in to which the hooks of the tiles could be placed, which allowed you to build your own sculpture in whichever way you wanted.
